While many of our connectors end up being utilised in fairly traditional applications, it is common for us to supply or manufacture specialist connectors that are used in interesting arenas, such as the military, aerospace, and motorsport industries. We have recently been asked to supply certain military connector products for some high-tech applications which we take a look at below.
Military connectors for new battlefield communications system
A new field deployable communications system developed by BAE Systems uses bayonet coupling power connectors from Weald Electronics. This is a tactical communications system with an impressive ability to interface with a wide range of other systems. This means that voice, data and video information can now be shared securely across the battlespace using one common system.
As a Weald Electronics distributor, we have supplied BAE with an adapted version of the LMH connector designed to perform to the requirements of MIL-C-26482 Series 1 and Patt 105. The connectors are also manufactured to IECQ-CECC spec BS/CECC 75201-003 and BS 9522 F0017.
Maximum current rating is 45A and peak working voltages can be as high as 1500V DC or AC. Four shell sizes in various styles as well as several contact arrangements can be supplied, as well as free shells with grounding fingers.
We hold a significant stock of popular LMH models for immediate delivery, as well as a huge inventory of shell styles, contacts, and accessories, for assembly to order on very short lead times compared to most connector suppliers. All versions can be specified in a variety of RoHS compliant finishes. FC Lane can also incorporate a wide selection of accessories including J sealing glands and protective caps.
micro38999 connectors for new integrated ground targeting system

A new integrated targeting system from Rockwell Collins uses micro38999 circular connectors supplied by FC Lane Electronics. Called FireStorm™, this system provides sophisticated ground targeting technology while simplifying military data links. The system consists of a lightweight, loosely coupled and modular joint-fires system with hardware options that allow users to tailor the system to their mission needs.
SOURIAU’s micro38999 circular military connectors - that includes three couplings: threaded coupling (8DA range), break away (8BA range) and bayonet (8LTA range) - are designed for the most demanding environments and offer considerable performance advantages over even the smallest MIL-DTL-38999 Series III units. The micro connectors satisfy the increasing demand for more compact, lighter connection solutions for military, aerospace, and industrial applications.
Although the size of this SOURIAU connector has been dramatically reduced, performance has not been compromised. As an example, micro38999 military cable connectors can withstand vibration levels of up to 44Grms at a temperature of 125ºC for up to 8 hours. They have removable crimp contacts which allow them to be wired or unwired on-site and up to 26 contacts can be accommodated in a choice of five layouts.
The micro38999 circular connectors are available in three different fastening systems – screw fastening, bayonet coupling and push-pull.
FC Lane Electronics has available products in the classic Cadmium, Zinc Cobalt and Electroless Nickel finishes, although the connectors can be supplied with non-reflective Black Zinc Nickel protection to satisfy the latest RoHS directives.
