Mechanical Design Engineer
DEPARTMENT: WEALD ELECTRONICS LTD
REPORTING TO: TECHNICAL MANAGER
JOB PURPOSE: TO PROVIDE ENGINEERING DESIGN, DETAIL DRAWING AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR THE MANUFACTURE AND SALE OF A WIDE RANGE OF ELECTRO/ MECHANICAL INTERCONNECTION PRODUCTS AND COMPONENTS IN ACCORDANCE WITH COMPANY REQUIREMENTS.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
- As part of a small team, generate connector and cable assembly designs and parts lists to BS8888 (After some product training)
- Create new product detail drawings for sub-contract component manufacture to BS8888.
- Implement design changes on existing products and components and re-issue where required.
- Working with and supporting the Technical Manager on new product concepts, designs and solutions, including special projects upon customer request.
- Assist the Technical Manager in creating technical specifications, datasheets and offers/proposal drawings for customers where required.
- Provide customer technical support and respond to technical queries both internally and externally after training.
- Provide 3D CAD models of products for customers from the database or generate as required.
- Liaising with production and General Manager to determine the need for any new or replacement external tooling and/or internal assembly tooling.
- Design basic tools and jigs for assembly/production requirements.
- Assist the Technical Manager and QM in determining the necessity for new work instructions, testing equipment etc.
- To provide ‘hands-on’ technical/engineering support to the General Manager, shop floor, tool room and QA department.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURS:
- Experienced (minimum five years) Electro-Mechanical Design Engineer/Draughter with proficiency in Autodesk Inventor 3D CAD software or willingness to re-train/migrate from similar software.
- Competent user of MS Office software applications essential, basic understanding of ERP/MRP software an advantage.
- HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering (or similar) preferred, as a minimum.
- An appreciation of basic electrical principles.
- Experience and working knowledge of BS EN ISO 9001:2015, BS8888 and, in particular, the engineering change process essential.
- Previous drawing office experience gained in a light electro-mechanical manufacturing environment essential.
- Prior experience of a manufacturing & assembly environment associated with small batch production of electro-mechanical assemblies such as connectors or switches and the materials used in their manufacture.
- Be familiar with core manufacturing processes, i.e. turning, milling, electroplating, pressing, 3D printing, laser marking, adhesive bonding, plastic moulding, rubber moulding and the potential tooling required.
- Experience of cable assemblies and fibre optics a distinct advantage.
- Some practical engineering/machining/tooling experience a distinct advantage.
- The ability to organise time and priorities to achieve business results in a timely manner.
- The ability to work independently and solve problems without instruction/supervision.
- The ability to anticipate a situation rather than just responding to it after it has happened.
- An effective communicator with a willingness to participate in business-led meetings/presentations.
- Full, clean driving licence.
